Over my Back Fence, a Lorikeet Lands

Over my Back Fence, a Lorikeet Lands are part of a series of scanned images which developed in the wake of the devastating bush fires which heralded in 2020. With the overwhelming loss to wildlife and environment and the stark realisation of the fragility of life, finding a Lorikeet feather on a local footpath along the Merri Creek felt incredibly precious. The Merri Creek flows through my neighbourhood and the Northern suburbs of Melbourne, located on the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri people.
Referencing memento mori, the found feathers and plants celebrate local native birds and plants and act as a metaphor for freedom and flight in contrast with our self-imposed borders, containment and notions of keeping safe.
